The Microcosmos App
UX/UI & Data Visualization
Project: Mobile App Design — Genomic Data Visualization
Client: KOONKIE Inc.
Overview & Goals:
To design a mobile experience that makes complex genomic data accessible and engaging to the public. The app visualizes biological diversity through interactive data diagrams and aims to spark curiosity, while maintaining clarity, usability, and strong brand consistency.
Key Deliverables:
User research: journey mapping, card sorting
Low-, mid-, and high-fidelity wireframes
UI design including interactive data visualizations (Circos diagrams)
Clickable prototype for user testing
Developer hand-off with design specs
Contributions:
Collaborated with data scientists and biologists to translate technical content into intuitive visual elements.
Defined visual layout and information hierarchy to ensure clarity across screens.
Designed UI assets with attention to detail (typography, iconography, color usage) to align with brand principles.
Prepared screens and assets optimized for performance on mobile devices.

The best way for me to begin to explain the process of developing this app is by introducing our client, a team of highly trained data scientists, computational experts, and biologists, KOONKIE Inc., they work to develop software solutions to communicate the value a biological insight from their clients’ research.

This was a complex design process, the main goals:
Design a mobile app to get the public interested in genetic data visualization.
Incorporate visual design using Circos (genomic data visual diagram) and provide unparalleled user involvement to create an interactive experience of genomic diversity on our planet.
“The simplest way to convey the elemental part of life”.
Steven.
We conducted user research and analyzed our findings using journey maps, card sorting exercises, developed low-mid-high fidelity wireframes, and finally a clickable prototype to achieve a human-centered solution.
